A Gateway to Rotary Clubs in Australia

The Rotary Club of Nelson Bay and the Port Stephens Women’s Crisis and Support Group joined forces to assist with funding for housing for women in dire need after experiencing domestic and family violence.

Despite some housing being available, unfortunately incidents of domestic violence had increased in the Port Stephens area and the need had increased. With the DA approved, the goal was to assist with funding for the building but also to make it a great day, good fun and an excellent profile for Rotary.

We chose Saturday 29th October, 2016. With a generous company sponsor and a variety of other donations we had the perfect Rotary Long Lunch, relaxing in a beautiful venue overlooking the sparkling waters of Port Stephens. With the wonderful assistance of our local Tomaree High School hospitality students, donations of Hunter Valley wines and cheeses, local oysters and the support of our local chef, the lunch was just superb.

Two hundred people, dressed up and smiling all day, enjoying every single aspect of the day. We had a vibrant and inspirational auctioneer, his job made easy by the really amazing, generously donated, auction and raffle prizes—they included a superb silk, Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress, also a holiday in Paris, just to name a couple. And then, because our guests came “to make a difference”, lots of people made dollar donations for building materials—door, windows, walls etc. We had decided on 4.30 as the finish time. Our last guests, still smiling, departed at 6.30!

On 1st December, at our Club Christmas Party, we handed the Chair of the Port Stephens Women’s Crisis and Support Group a cheque for $35,098.38. ROTARY MAKING A DIFFERENCE
